Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
I've been "in the business" of photography, graphic design, web design, and video editing since 1985 working for various mom and pop shops, design agencies and government contractors. I've been working for myself full time since April 2013.
What is your primary product or service?
Mark Gilvey Creative provides commercial corporate photography, graphic design and search engine optimization (SEO). I provide photographic, graphic and web design services to help meet the needs of companies in need of someone who can bring their vision to life and then I can make its web presence understood by the search engines.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I became interested in photography when I was in my teens. Two movies really rocked my world at the time: "Le Mans" starring Steve McQueen, made me fall in love with endurance sports car racing and I wanted to capture race cars with the best camera and technique I could. The second movie, "Star Wars" sparked my interest in optical special effects. This lead me to learn how to use special effect cameras (called optical printers) to produce images for multi-projector slide shows. I received my training in commercial photography from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.
I went to work for a "slide house" where I lived my dream of making optical special effects. I made graphics and special effects (what we do today in Photoshop and Powerpoint on film) that were used in multi-slide projector presentations at corporate conventions. The images were presented on a single screen with a single projector to a 5 screen wide panoramic presentation with 21 projectors, singers, dancers, and lasers. It was a very exciting time.
When video began to have a bigger influence in mult-media, the slide houses began to disappear. I then moved to prepress where I became a high-end scanner operator and, in keeping with my passion for special effects I became their lead photo retoucher. I was always interested in print advertising and making dynamic visuals and I was able to do that here. During this period, I also learned how to use Adobe After Effects which is a special effects video program. I used this program to build many short animated videos which were used in corporate video introductions (reminded me of the the slide days).
After 9-11, many creative firms where cut loose from their big contracts; ours was one of them. I then pursued web design where I learned to help businesses improve their web presence with graphic design, photography, animation, interaction, and search engine optimization.
From there I went to work as a graphic designer for a government contractor bringing my skills in graphic design and special effects to make exciting visuals to support their eLearning curriculum. Now I offer all this experience to my own customers.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
I can offer many services under one roof. This saves clients a lot of time and money not having to shop for a graphic designer, professional photographer, photo retoucher, photo illustrator, video editor, and web SEO separately. In today's climate, it is expensive to hire out separate companies for each of these skills and some of them, like photo retouching and illustration, might never even be considered because of their cost; I include them.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
I have just one with plans for a studio at some point.
Provide detailed directions to your location
My location is a private residence in the bottom depths of my home; I don't even have a window. Walk-up traffic is not permitted but if you become a client, you can come by to work on a project. This means I don't have a photo studio, I go to you, saving you time and driving frustration.
What type of payments do you accept?
Cash, check, VISA, MASTERCARD
Which areas do you service?
I service Northern Virginia and some parts of Washington DC and Maryland
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
I do.
What are your hours of operation?
9 - 5PM Monday - Friday and sometimes Sundays.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
"Your image work really helped my business; let me recommend you to a few other businesses I know could use your services".
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
Keep doing what you're doing and you'll keep getting what your getting.
